Don Kiely

Being an NATC guide is easily one of the very best jobs I've ever had. I love getting to meet new people from all over the world who are on vacation, looking to see new things and have new experiences...and to have fun! I love getting to take these new friends to some of my very favorite parts of Alaska and share with them my growing knowledge and understanding. I love getting to share what is good about this land and its people, and what is threatening it and us. And my co-workers are some of the finest people I've met.

But let's be real. It was a lot of work to get through training and that crucial CDL driving test. But the training I got was stellar, and has served me well every day since. Between school and 26 years here in Interior Alaska, I had a pretty good, general knowledge of Alaska history, science, politics, and other topics. But there was still a lot to learn about the Dalton Highway, Denali, and the surrounding areas, and I'm still learning, every day. Some days can be long and at times exhausting, particularly as I do everything I can to keep guests safe and happy. But the memory of every one of my trips still brings a smile to my face, even when things didn't go as I'd planned.
